What is Mezcal?

Mezcal is similar to Tequila, with the difference being that all Tequila is made specifically from the Blue Agave plant, where Mezcal can be made from any agave. Mezcal has a slightly higher alcohol content making it a bit stronger than regular Tequila.

Substitutions:

  • You can use any orange liqueur you have on hand, or even a splash of orange juice.
  • If you don’t have agave nectar, you can substitute a simple syrup, which is made by heating up 1 part water and 1 part sugar, until the sugar dissolves.
  • Not a fan of Tajin? You can also rim your glass with sea salt, coarse kosher salt, or margarita salt, if you have it.
  • Of course, you can just use tequila in this recipe for a regular margarita.
  • Up the spice with our homemade Jalapeno Simple Syrup.
