Why we love this Maple Cider Old Fashioned recipe-

We love a good whiskey cocktail, and this one is full of fall flavors that your taste buds will love. While you can certainly enjoy this cocktail any time of year, we love the seasonal flavor that the maple and apple cider bring to this old-fashioned cocktail recipe.

  • 4 ounces apple cider
  • 2 ounces bourbon – we used Knob Creek- they have 9 year, 12 year, Single Barrel, as well as some delicious flavored whiskeys.
  • ½ ounce pure maple syrup
  • 2 orange slices

How to serve an old fashioned

Old Fashioneds are typically served in an old-fashioned glass, or rocks glass with orange peel and maraschino cherries. We garnished this fun version with fresh orange slices and a cinnamon stick. An apple slice would also be a delicious garnish.

What type of alcohol goes in an Old Fashioned?

Traditionally, a good-quality bourbon whiskey or rye whiskey is used to make an Old Fashioned. Quality matters more in a traditional old fashioned, because the liquor is the key ingredient. However, you can get away with a less expensive base spirit in this version since we have lots of other flavors to balance our Maple Old Fashioned.

Tips:

  • This drink is best served with a large ice cube. Regular ice cubes will work if you use them, but grab yourself a square ice cube mold for a less watered down experience.
  • Skip the syrup and opt for Knob Creek Maple Bourbon for the maple flavor in this drink. Just be sure to add a sweetener to make up for the sweetness of maple syrup if you skip it. Simple syrup or a sugar cube, like you would use in a regular Old Fashioned, would both work.
  • Woodford Reserve and Buffalo Trace are two other delicious bourbons that are easy on the budget, as well.
  • For a little extra something, grate just a small amount of fresh orange zest over top of the drink.
