Homemade Caramel Sauce
I have a different recipe to share with you today, I’m sharing this homemade caramel sauce because I am going to be using it in a ton of recipes this Fall. I experimented with making my own caramel sauce the other day, and this turned out delicious. Let’s be honest- when you use caramels from the store or buy premade caramel sauce- do you really know what is in it? I know I’m not perfect about knowing what is in my food, but this is just one way that it clicked for me that I could make something and know exactly what was in it, plus, it turned out way better than anything store bought.
I love caramel. I love using it in my recipes, and it is even great by itself, I love to dip apples into it- Honeycrisp apples are the best!
It is so simple to make.
Grab your medium-sized saucepan, and here are the ingredients you need-
- 1 cup light brown sugar, packed
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
To make it-
- Add your sugar, butter, and milk to your saucepan.
- Whisk together over medium heat.
- Continue heating until mixture begins to boil.
- Boil over low-medium heat for 5-7 minutes until sugar is dissolved and mixture begins to thicken.
- Remove from heat, stir in 1 tsp vanilla.
- Caramel will continue to thicken slightly as it cools, too.
The best pouring consistency for this for recipes is probably at room temperature, or maybe even warmed slightly. As it cools in the refrigerator it will thicken even more, so you may have to let it come up to temperature to get a good consistency for pouring or dipping.
There you have it- super easy homemade caramel sauce. I won’t use a pre-made sauce for recipes again, this stuff is so good. For a printable version of the recipe, you can check below.
